DATA ANALYSIS
AND PRESENTATION

Module 2

Data analysis is the process through which meaning is attributed to data. This module emphasises that this process is not neutral. The processes, techniques and tools used are based on certain assumptions and have limitations. It is important for managers to understand these assumptions and limitations, and potential pitfalls. This understanding will focus the M&E manager's task of ensuring quality results, including how these are presented.

The first part of this module explores the overall process, described in a generic form as well as looking at the specifics of qualitative and quantitative data collection. The second part focuses on cost analysis, a frequent weakness in M&E. The third part examines impact analysis. The fourth part covers a range of tools and techniques for data analysis and presentation.

OBJECTIVES

LINKS WITH OTHER MODULES

This module follows from MODULE 5 (data gathering).

The data analysis process also links closely with MODULE 7 (promoting use of M&E) as both the logic and limitations of analysis must be easily captured by users.

In dealing with this module, it will be important to refer back to MODULE 3, Framing Information needs, to situate the first step of the data analysis process, one that precedes data collection.
