  • In 2002, 600 children lived in residential institutions in Albania, including 150 in infant homes.

  • In recent years, the number of child placements in residential institutions has been gradually increasing, from 500 in 1994 to 600 in 2002.

  • The number of infants in residential care (infant homes) has decreased since 2000. The children living in infant homes are 0 to 3 years old, the age group for which institutionalization is the most harmful.

  • There is no information available in the UNICEF TransMONEE 2004 database on children in foster or guardianship care.

  • In 2002, only 49 Albanian children were adopted nationally and internationally. There has been a decrease over the years in the number of adoptions.


  • In 2004, 28 Albanian children were adopted at the international level.
