In recent years, the number of child placements in residential institutions has been gradually increasing, from 500 in 1994 to 600 in 2002.

The number of infants in residential care (infant homes) has decreased since 2000. The children living in infant homes are 0 to 3 years old, the age group for which institutionalization is the most harmful.

There is no information available in the UNICEF TransMONEE 2004 database on children in foster or guardianship care.

In 2002, only 49 Albanian children were adopted nationally and internationally. There has been a decrease over the years in the number of adoptions.
